Hazelwood Initiative, Inc.

Hazelwood Initiative’s roots date to 1994 and the merger of two local groups: the Hazelwood Neighborhood Maintenance Task Force, which engaged city departments to address abandoned housing, maintenance of public infrastructure, and open-air drug sales; and the Hazelwood Economic Leveraging Partnership, which raised financial resources for community development.

Today, Hazelwood Initiative (HI) is a 501c3 nonprofit actively working against the growing threat of gentrification posed by the redevelopment of the former LTV Coke Works site, now known as Hazelwood Green.  HI’s mission is to build a stronger Hazelwood through inclusive community development. To achieve this goal, the organization preserves and creates affordable residential and commercial spaces, keeps residents informed about proposed developments and critical issues, manages community gardens and greenspaces, and advocates for equitable transportation access.
